Thorin startles slightly.
“I did not realize it was so famous among hobbits,” he says after several seconds.
“Oh, it isn’t. My mother was...a story collector, of sorts. I don’t think any hobbit would even know the story now, save for me. I remember thinking when I first heard it how awful it must have been for the dwarves who lost everything that day.” Bilbo finally looks over at Thorin. “I am sorry for what you’ve gone through.”
Thorin holds his eye, expression unreadable, before he ducks his head in acknowledgment.

In the evening before the Battle of the five armies, after Gandalf and Bilbo talked to Thranduil and Bard, the latter two stay together in Thranduil's tent. A moment of curiousity leads to unexpected intimacy.
"You may touch it if you want.", he said.
Thranduil's gaze snapped up from his beard to his eyes in surprise.
"Touch... it? Your beard?", he repeated in a tone of disbelief that Bard had never heard in his voice before. Though he certainly did not seem repulsed by the idea.

Thorin reined in his irritation long before his hand ever reached the round green door, but it sat beneath his ribs all the same, hot, and familiar as banked iron. Hobbiton smelled of cut grass, damp earth, fresh bread, and peace so domestic it affronted him. He had crossed wild lands, slept beneath hostile skies, buried kin, swallowed pride, and borne the memory of fire and ruin in his very bones, and now he stood before a painted door with a brass knob set precisely in the middle.
(So, this is where Gandalf has brought us. To a hole in the hill.)
