Bilbo pressed his ear to the door but he could hear no sound of heavy boots on the ground nor the murmur of any voices. He was in between, which was always dangerous, all the more so because of his current designation with the inhabitants outside his hidden door.

Summary
Thorin stood on the battlements above the great gate of Erebor and stared out over the ruined fields. Where the great battle had taken place the earth was disrupted, torn and ragged, gray in some places, black in others. Mounds had been created where the bodies of the orcs and bats and wargs and all manner of enemies had been buried. There were small flowers appearing out of the devastation, white delicate things with drooping heads, turning those tiny mountains pale. Their sweet scent drifted up from the ruin, making Thorin's heart turn over in his chest.
Bilbo would have loved to see them.

Summary
Thorin walked hand-in-hand with Dwalin down the steps towards Erebor's great gate. His heart was being rabbit-fast in his chest, but from grief or fear, he was not sure. Bilbo had been dear to Gandalf, they all knew that. Gandalf had been wroth with them when they would not tell the wizard of Bilbo's whereabouts after the Battle of Five Armies, though Thorin had no part in that. He had been confined to the healer's tents then, too injured to see anyone. By the time Thorin was able to have visitors once again Gandalf had quit the area to places unknown.

Summary
The first time Dwalin set eyes on one Bilbo Baggins he had been thoroughly disappointed. Such a soft creature, so bewildered, so unprepared. The wizard had claimed that their Burglar would be well versed in his duties and the Quest. Instead what Dwalin had seen was a fussy mouse who flinched whenever Dwalin so much as grunted at him. That jumpiness only got worse once the rest of the Company arrived, turning this so-called Burglar into a Bungler instead, as Bifur had grumbled into his ale as the night wore on.

Summary
Bilbo let out a yelp when he landed on Bag End's hard floors, feeling the crack as his arm broke under his body. He let out a low groan, the pain making him queasy. His feet ached and stung and his head was still spinning from the fall and all the memories of the last time he was on that balcony. When he had last seen his – Bilbo closed his eyes and ignored the way something hot slipped down his temples and vanished into his hair. He let out a breath, feeling a hot curl of emotion lodged deep in his chest.

Summary
Bilbo crept out of the Thain's smial, his feet silent on the warm, worn floors of his cousin's home. The hour was early enough that only the sun-keepers were up, though their usual rituals had been stymied by the position of their people so deep inside the mountain. As he eased the door shut, shivering a little in the chill of the in between, he thought he could hear Fortinbras' snoring coming down the hall. His cousin was not going to be pleased that Bilbo left so early and without breakfast but he had already stayed long enough with them and did not want to stress their stores even though he knew that the Thain and his family would never go without, not with the Took family's reserves still in place.

Summary
Bilbo lay there and stared up at the ceiling, feeling a ridiculous smile stretching his face. The bruises that were sure to bloom over his skin from pulling that tower inward with him were going to appear soon and he would be so sore in the morning but Thorin and Dwalin did not hate him. The words kept repeating in his head. The way...the way they had spoke about him. About how they – how they did not blame him, not for any of it, even if he blamed himself. How they...how they had never wanted to hurt him. How they knew now that the gold-sickness had twisted them up like knots. How they wanted him to be at peace –
Wait a minute.

Summary
Gandalf's words rang in Thorin's ears. It was impossible. It had to be. There was no way their Bilbo, one Bilbo Baggins of the Shire, found the One Ring of Sauron simply sitting beneath the Misty Mountains and picked it up for a lark.
Of course, should anyone pick such a legendary item up, it would just be their Bilbo's luck that it would be him.

Summary
Thorin stood in front of the fire, hands clasped behind his back, as his council argued with each other around the table in the middle of the room. After finding Payr unconscious in the hall Nori had slipped off to gather his people while Thorin got the guard to help him get Payr to the medic's hall. The peace-cup, Thorin had noted, was also gone when he and the guards on patrol had come back to where Payr was laying. Nori was still no where to be seen, having not come to the council meeting after Dáin's arrival late that evening. His cousin's presence there had been short but his words had kept the rest of them up for the rest of the night.

Summary
Thorin had only ever heard stories of the Lady of the Wood. While the rumors about her origins were wild and varied, Thorin knew that the Lady was an elf of great age and that even his own grandfather had feared her, if only a little bit. From the way Lord Elrond and the rest of the elves that were already at Erebor straightened it seemed as though his grandfather was right to be wary.

Summary
Thorin was falling. Thorin was falling. There was no way to catch him, no way to save him from that height. Nothing but Bilbo. Bilbo, who had to fall once more.
So Bilbo did the only thing he could think to do. He took one step. Two. Then a third. Then he was leaping from that platform, everything lighting up around him as he slipped from the in between and back into the world once more.
“Thorin! Take my hand!”

Summary
In a world where Bilbo Baggins destroyed the One Ring in a wave of dragon fire, where he is forced to rely on ancient abilities of his folk long thought gone, Bilbo – with the help of his people – kills Smaug the Golden...
And gets declared Outcast from his gold-mad Company and King. But those old abilities of his people have far more consequences than even they know, and as they explore this strange new situation they have found themselves in, they find that the world as they know it has changed as well, and things far larger than themselves have been moved by the smallest folk on Arda's far shores. It will take faith, forgiveness, and love to find their way through it all, but Bilbo, so afraid of falling now, will have to fall again and again to save the ones he loves yet again.
