Summary
Maglor grumbled as his father kept slapping the sides of his and Maedhros' tent, wanting nothing more than to bury his head under his pillow and go back to sleep. The morning light was just hitting the top of their trees, which meant it was early. Far too early to be up. But there was no arguing with their father – or their mother, who had been the one who wanted to go on this trip and their father would remake the world if their mother but said the word. So on this camping trip they went.

“This sounds a lot like a marriage proposal.”

Summary
Caranthir glanced at the figure riding at his side and then away. The afternoon sun was slanting through the leaves of the tall trees of Thargelion, sending shafts of golden light through the emerald foliage. Around them were his guards and retainers, plus a contingent of the Men who had allied themselves with him – and who had earned themselves Caranthir's eternal gratitude. He wasn't sure who was more uncomfortable with the situation, though, himself or Ulfang. Nonetheless Ulfang had returned Caranthir's son to him and that was a grace he had not thought he would ever receive.

Summary
Turgon breathed out a plume of white, the bitter winds almost snatching the air from his lungs. At his side Idril huddled, her hood pulled up to hide most of her face. The snow stung his eyes, his face, any exposed skin. The unending dark ate away at his will and it was only for Idril's sake that he put one foot in front of the other.

Summary
Fingolfin staggered as he blinked open eyes that had been frozen wide, staring up at the Great Enemy above him, struggling to breathe from that monstrous foot upon his neck. He remembered striking Morgoth with Ringil one last time, cleaving a wound to that Vala's foot and making him rear back with a roar. Then and only then had Fingolfin seen the sky, a sliver of blue, of hope.

Summary
Galadriel leaned back in her chair, feeling the warm wind stir strands of her hair against her cheek. Behind her she could hear the bustle of the house, the steps of the maids, the quiet murmur of the butler as he oversaw her schedule. Galadriel locked her fingers together in her lap, breathing deep and calm, shoulders as relaxed as she could make them. The garden in front of her was neat and orderly, with tended flowerbeds of pinks and whites and yellows, with nary a weed in sight. The grass was clipped to an even surface. The stones almost gleamed with how clean they were.

Summary
Erestor smoothed his hair behind his ears for what felt like the hundredth time. The carriage ride up to Elrond's manse seemed to go on forever. He could feel how tense Lindir was at his side. He leaned into his friend's shoulder and felt Lindir press back. It felt strange to be so nervous before his friend and lord. It felt so strange to be ashamed in front of Elrond and Glorfindel both, but the hot burn of that emotion sat in his gut like a knife.

Summary
Sauron stared up at the night sky, his body aching, head pounding. He had felt like this only once before, when that child of Melian came to free her lover with Huan at her side. He remembered how his spirit fought her enchantments, how he had fought with Huan changing skin after skin to attempt to best them. Still Lúthien had shone like a Flame that he could barely remember, a Flame that haunted him for Ages, past the War of Wrath, past his haunting of the elves in his form as Annatar, past the making of his Ring that he thought might finally conquer the memory of that Flame and snuff it out.

Summary
Thorin stood on the battlements above the great gate of Erebor and stared out over the ruined fields. Where the great battle had taken place the earth was disrupted, torn and ragged, gray in some places, black in others. Mounds had been created where the bodies of the orcs and bats and wargs and all manner of enemies had been buried. There were small flowers appearing out of the devastation, white delicate things with drooping heads, turning those tiny mountains pale. Their sweet scent drifted up from the ruin, making Thorin's heart turn over in his chest.
Bilbo would have loved to see them.

Summary
Fingon stared out over the shifting ice of the Helcaraxë in a frozen stupor. He had woken with a gasp, heart aching and furious, pain wracked and sick with it. He had been on the field of battle, had been caught in place by that fiery whip, had watched as Gothmog's black axe swing towards his skull. He had heard the screams of triumph from Morgoth's wretched army. He knew he had met his end.
Then Fingon had woken up, tangled in his bedroll, sweat slicking his skin from a heat only his mind remembered.

Summary
Bilbo squinted at the sky, then ahead at the pony in front of him, then over to the two dwarves hovering by his side. “No,” he said.
“Yes,” said Thorin Oakenshield, one would-be King Under the Mountain, the bane of Bilbo's life and probably the love of his life – or one of them at least. For on Bilbo other side stood Dwalin, silent and stern and bristling with weapons and a great scowl on his face. “Get on the pony, Bilbo.”
“I would rather not.”

Summary
Thorin sat up at the fire, taking first watch as the rest of his Company settled down around him. Their Burglar, his Bilbo, was wrapped up tight in his bed roll, acting like he had slept in such places for most of his life, when they all knew that their hobbit had rarely left the confines of the Shire, much less his cozy home of Bag End. Dwalin had waited until Bilbo seemed asleep to pitch his roll next to the hobbit. All around camp Thorin had watched his Company settle, even his boys, to make sure Bilbo was protected at all times.

Summary
“What exactly is going on here?” Erestor leaned forward in his chair as Galadriel got settled opposite him. There had been a huddle of maids at the top of the stairs when they had stepped into the hall but Galadriel had swept past them without a second look. He also knew that at least one of those maids had followed them. He thought he could hear murmurs from the door but whomever was gathered there were smart enough not to disturb them.

Summary
Glorfindel chewed on his thumbnail as the minutes ticked by. He could hear Elrond arguing with Turgon and the others in the other room. Ecthelion was a tense line by his side, gray eyes glancing at the door form time to time, tracking more of the arguments than Glorfindel was, he was sure. As for Erestor and Galadriel, there was no sound, not even a whisper of voices coming from the stairwell. Glorfindel knew that Erestor and Galadriel were fast friends, had been close for Ages, even before Glorfindel joined Elrond's household, but it was another thing to see Galadriel take Erestor by the arm and lead him away as if Erestor was a part of her own close family.
