Summary

Dealing with younger, weaker bodies and the weight of future knowledge they will find it's not as easy as a simple do-over. Every change has an effect on themselves and on the world.

The words brought a spasm of pain to Ouyang’s breast. In an instant, he was transported back to that ger, with the copper stink of blood thick in his nostrils, its bitter taste filling his mouth, Esen’s heaving body held in his arms, feeling his own fate unspool like a ruined tapestry. “Lord Esen is dead,” he said. He’d died a senseless death, and once the funeral rites had been performed, Chaghan had punished his son’s eunuch with fifty blows of the heavy rod for failing to protect him and thrown him out to starve in the streets.
Ouyang is part of the bandit group Xu Da joins after the monastery burns down.
