To be at the periphery is to be at the edge. To hover just out of focus, like the faint outline of a figure caught in the corner of a photograph. Nico had never cared much for the periphery—not when the center demanded so much attention.
It wasn’t that Nico disliked EJ. It was more like he didn’t really have the bandwidth to form an opinion. EJ was soft-spoken, one of the quieter trainees who rarely drew attention to himself unless he was performing. While Nico himself associated with some of the more prominent personalities, EJ seemed content to float along on the edges. Peripheral. Not Nico’s concern.
To be at the edge of someone’s vision, Nico thought, always there but just out of focus.
But now... now Nico wasn’t so sure.

Summary
