They’re only standing like that for about a minute, if even, when Hollander decides to make conversation, “So, uh, are your parents here with you?”
Ilya just nods. His mom is here with him, of course she is. She wouldn’t want to be anywhere else and Ilya doesn’t think he appreciates her enough for that, but he tries. As best as he can, at least.
“That’s nice, mine are too,” Hollander says quietly with a smile and they fall back into that earlier silence, listening just to those same sounds.
Skates on ice.
Sticks hitting pucks.
Each other’s breathing.
After a few minutes, Hollander awkwardly clears his throat and takes a step back, “Anyway, uh, I should probably go. My parents, they’re waiting on me, but um…” He trails off and Ilya notices the hesitation in his voice before he takes his hand out of his pocket and holds it out to Ilya again, smiling, “good luck in the tournament.”

Summary
Shane Hollander is tired of wanting someone he cannot have, and he’s dying as he waits for someone who will not stay. Someone who doesn’t want to stay, not when there are so many others waiting for him. Fun of another variety, Shane left a treat amongst many.
It’s humiliating. It’s distracting. And it feels like shit.
He wishes he could erase his feelings, move on as easily. In an effort to gain back control over the ‘situation’ that has become his romantic attraction to a notorious player, Shane attempts at imitating Ilya Rozanov’s methods until he perfects them and becomes as good as keeping it light and casual as his rival.
Or Shane tries to Hoe Phase himself into a self discovery journey to choke and kill his feelings for Ilya Rozanov. Ilya is not the only who suffers from it, but he sure feels like he’s being choked and killed.

Summary
After coming out to Rose, Shane decides he doesn't want to lie anymore, even if he isn't sure coming out will mean he gets happily ever after with Ilya. When coming out to the Voyageurs leaves him wondering what his future in Montreal might look like, he lets himself be a little selfish, he lets himself wonder if there might be somewhere else he might be happy. If Montreal wants to get rid of a generational player, he's not about to stop them, especially if it means he can get a little closer to joy.
