"So," Jaskier said, trying not to act too much like a startled deer. All four of the dragons were watching him keenly. The bristleback was even tapping a claw against the ground, impatient, like he couldn't wait for Jaskier to stop talking so that he could abandon all pretense of politeness and lunge for Jaskier.
Do bristlebacks eat humans? Jaskier wondered. He really should have spent more time with his compendium last night, after they'd seen the Cutter, but Jaskier thought that pulling it out of his pack to consult its pages now would probably get him eaten. He swallowed.
Dragons respect bravery, he reminded himself. Just ask what you came here to ask. Then – then pray.
"Have – do – have any of you thought about taking up arms – well, wings, I suppose – for king and country?" Jaskier asked. "Redania – all of the North – needs help against Nilfgaard."
The white wolfheart showed Jaskier all of his teeth. "Honestly," he growled, "I'd rather die."
(Or, a Witcher/Temeraire fusion AU, because there aren't enough Temeraire fics in all of the world, and while there are many, many excellent dragon!Jaskier fics out there, I wanted to try something a little different.)
