    Arthur sighed and rose to his feet and stood over her, still scowling and looking mighty cagey. “Well?” he said. “Are you likely to behave?”

    Emmeline stared up at him. She was too hungry and in too much pain to feel very afraid. “What’s misbehavior to you, mister?”

    “Trying to leave. Causin’ any kind of trouble at all.”

    Emmeline blinked slowly. “I really don’t got it in me to.”

    Arthur cast her a doubtful look. With a shake of his head, he unsheathed a large knife from his belt and darted around the tree. Emmeline felt her ties come undone a moment later. “I s’pose we’ll see. Just to warn you, miss, in case nobody has,” he came back to stand in front of her, the brim of his hat covering his eyes, “there’d be no point to it. You try runnin’, you won’t get very far.”
