As Maevis stepped through the suffocating steam of the Targeton Station, she was met by Aerion’s uncanny and arrogant smirk. Maevis thought he looked happy somehow, that his smirk wasn't just out of arrogance. "The Pearl of Copenhagen," Aerion murmured, gripping her hand like a trophy.
Heavy footsteps cut through the platform’s clamor, parting the crowd. Maekar stepped in, dismissing Aerion’s grip with a single look. He cast a brief glance at the medallion around Maevis’s neck, one of the baptismal gifts he had sent years ago when she was only a child, for a fleeting moment, the soot-stained exhaustion on his face softened, visible only to her. And she had noticed it as she always noticed things.
"Aerion," Maekar’s voice was a low, iron warning.
Aerion stepped back, giving way to his father. Maekar laid a hand gently on the girl’s shoulder, his touch free of the West’s usual grit. She felt content at that moment, forgetting her fears about the move, he felt safe to her somehow. And then with a father’s true warmth, he whispered, "Welcome to your new home, Maevis".
