    Summary

A thirty five years old Hanguang-jun wakes up in his fifteen years old body on the first day of the Cloud Recesses lectures. Armed with the knowledge of every tragedy to come, he decides he will not be proper this time. He ignores the rules, defends Wei Wuxian from the start, and creates a massive scandal by publicly courting the headache of the Yunmeng Jiang sect before the war can even begin.

    Summary

Wei Wuxian opens the letter and skims through, feeling his frown deepen with every line. “Oh. A request from Yiling. This man Tong Shen writes, 'I can’t explain what’s happening — you wouldn’t believe me if I tried. The hills are moving and they are hungry. Please send aid, Hanguang-jun, this humble one begs you.' Well, my curiosity is certainly piqued."

A few months after the events of Guanyin Temple, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji take on a night hunt of an unusual sort: The Burial Mounds are spreading, quickly and with no apparent explanation.

In Wei Wuxian, it brings old, long-buried things bubbling to the surface.

    Summary

"Do you want to taste it, Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian laughs a little, almost shy. "Since you're in such a rule breaking mood."

Lan Wangji stares at Wei Wuxian for a long moment. Wen Yuan's pulse starts, inexplicably, to thunder in his ears. He should tell them he's here, but his mouth won't open. He should leave, but his legs have grown roots and are anchoring him to the ground.

"I will taste it," Hanguang-jun says at last.

    Wen Yuan comes of age.

    Summary

To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.

    He comes close, though.

By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.

What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.

“Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”

Lan Wangji stops in his tracks.

    Summary

Wei Wuxian is staring up at the sky, thinking idly about the taste of Emperor’s Smile on his tongue, when Suibian jumps full force onto his stomach and cries, “A-Xian, don’t be mad!”

The sheer force of her pounce knocks the breath out of him. The resulting pause is just long enough for Jiang Cheng, who up to this point has been laying rather peacefully next to him, to shoot up and demand, “Oh great, what did you do now?”

To be fair, the question isn’t exactly unwarranted. Suibian looks an absolute mess: twigs stuck in her fur, dirt smeared across the white fluff of her underbelly. She’s panting up a storm, little heh heh heh gasps that haven’t edged into her normal high-pitched laughter. When her ears press back against her head, she could almost pass for pitiful.

    “Bichen hates me.”

Wei Wuxian’s first thought is Why would Lan Zhan’s daemon hate you?, but it’s followed quickly by remembering exactly where he is, how little trouble he’s caused today, and the fact that he hasn’t seen Suibian for a few minutes.

A grin spreads across his face.

(Or: The most important name a cultivator will ever pick isn’t for their sword. It’s for their daemon.)
