"You broke a man's wrist today." The emperor Pond, said in a amused tone.
"He touched me without my consent."
"In this court, that's grounds for a execution. Not a fracture."
"I'm aware."
Silence. Tea being poured. Phuwin tracked Pond's reflection in the bronze mirror—the precise wrist angle, the steady warrior's grip.
"My ministers say I should punish you," Pond said, sipping casually.
Phuwin let his shoulders tense. Beneath his sleeve, a stolen hairpin pressed cool against his inner wrist.
"I understand," he whispered. "I'll accept whatever judgment you give."
More silence. Pond set his cup down.
"Phuwin." He said it slowly, tasting the syllables. "When you stood on that man's neck pressing down - were you afraid?"
Phuwin looked up through his lashes. "No. I wasn't."
"You're very strange," Pond said finally. And then he smirked. "I like strange."
