He can hardly take his eyes off Makkari as she begins to catch up with everyone and tell them about her day. He misses most of what’s being said, studying the way her entire body moves while she converses and the way she looks at all of her friends with a breathtaking amount of care and warmth. He doesn’t manage to look away until Thena leans in close and mutters, “Druig, my dear, hearts are going to start popping out of your eyes if you don’t fix yourself. Quickly.”
Druig composes himself, and says two words he never anticipated saying to any members of this group, except for if and when they decided to leave him alone. “Thank you.” And then, since he’s already in too deep: “Thena, has anyone ever told you that you’re a godsend?”
Thena’s smile is crooked and lovely when she says, “Once or twice,” and Druig knows that there’s no going back, for better or for worse.
Or, Druig meets Kingo and Thena in some nonsense sociology course and consequently gets dragged into their friend group, where he experiences cut-throat D&D sessions, being insulted in new and creative ways, learning to be kind to himself, and falling head-over-ass in love with beautiful, beautiful Makkari
