Alicent sighs. “I do not know. We were friends many years ago.”
At least, Alicent likes to think they were friends. But the princess was always sporadic with her attentions— quick to grow bored of things, discarding the old in favor of the new. Alicent supposes that’s what happened to her, as well. She had written letters, those first few moons after she returned to Oldtown.

Rhaenyra had to die.
Alicent came to the conclusion as smoothly as she had come to any other logical assessment. There had been no grand epiphany, no fevered moral debate. It simply was.
Rhaenyra Targaryen was just another old money parasite, a relic of dynastic wealth, a siphon hooked into the throat of the world. An heir to nothing but greed. She would die, and the world would not notice, because the world was already dead. Because the wealthy had made it so. Because they had taken and taken and taken and Alicent had long since decided that she would take back.
