Iceman had been in the Navy long enough to understand how it functioned. Stability only existed where he could control it, in the cockpit, his plane responding to his every touch. Everything else couldn't be relied on. Everyone else always left, sooner or later. Why had he expected Maverick to be any different?

Summary
Ejecting isn’t something one ever gets used to. Well, most Pilots never had to eject one single time in their entire career. Not one Pilot Maverick knew from flight school or his Top Gun class ever had to eject. But here he was, at Mach 10.4, pulling the ejection handles once again.
This time, it was his fault.
As Hondo told him, the contract threshold is Mach 10. Not Mach 10.1, not Mach 10.2, Mach 10. He had to do it for the program, he had to keep the program alive. Not for himself, but for everyone else working on the hypersonic program.

Summary
The truth is that Maverick has always cared too much about the things people say. The truth is that he’s spent his whole life trying to outrun his father’s legacy, and sometimes he stumbles and the rest of the world catches up to him, and it hurts when they get close enough for him to hear the awful things that come out of their mouths.
The truth is that Maverick learned from a very young age that sometimes the only way to survive is to hit first and make it count.

Maverick knows pain. Hell, it's the only thing he's good at besides flying a plane. He just doesn't know how much longer Goose can bear it with him before it starts to break them apart.
He doesn't know how long he can stand Iceman staring at him before he starts to wonder exactly what it is the other aviator is actually seeing buried under Maverick's skin.
