Summary
The only reason Apollo even notices the little bakery-cafe is because the only other person he finds on the street at this time besides him is sitting in front of it. The only reason he even notices them at all is because they’re wearing, of all things, a pink top hat and matching cape, which is really not particularly common LA 6 AM streetwear in Apollo’s experience—although it’s not completely out of the bounds of normality, either, so he decides to reserve his immediate judgment.
Which is either the best or worst decision of his entire life, the jury’s still out.

She loves him, she’s dead fucking angry, she has an early morning taking a new acolyte up into the mountains tomorrow, she’s so sick of this stupid conversation, she wants things to be simple again, throwing fries at the side of his head while leaning over the couch in the office, Nick pretending not to notice, Pearl acting scandalized and scolding her while she laughs. But she’s 23 and nothing really seems simple anymore, or maybe it never was.
So she says the cruelest thing she can think of: “You’re reminding me of Mia, you know.”

With his arms crossed firmly over his chest, Jean Vicquemare stands with his hip cocked, glowering across the edge of the earth to Harry du Bois, who is fumbling his way into justifying his actions of the past week of hell. The devil on his left shoulder inputs that Harry’s experiences can be explained by this or that while the angel on Jean’s right shoulder complains under her breath about how late it’s getting, tired of standing around in the cold. Lieutenant Kitsuragi, whom Jean doesn’t know well enough to assign a metaphor to, stands calmly and watches the scene unfold with trained neutrality.

The synonymity of Phoenix with terminus is a terrifying thing. Something earth-shattering. The ache is felt in the very core of Miles’ body. Under his flesh, deeply embedded in his bone marrow. He is always a careful traveler, eyes keen like a lamb’s horizontal, prey eyes whenever he takes a step out in public.
He is not scared of returning to Phoenix.
He is, however, scared of everyone else knowing their inextricability, the implications bleeding past the personal and into the legal system they’ve been swallowed in.
Or, Miles and Phoenix's precariousness throughout the Dark Age of Law. What does it mean to go beyond the narrative of the legal system?

Miles came back from Europe seven years ago after realizing he couldn’t stay away from Phoenix, but found Phoenix had disappeared without a trace after losing his badge. Now seven years later Phoenix comes back as a murder suspect, and as the current Chief Prosecutor, Miles has no alternative but to be involved with his return, even though it opens all the wounds he had worked so hard to close over those years. But he will find that Phoenix himself has been severely damaged by the things he had to go through mostly alone, and that if they’re able to trust each other again, they can work towards healing together.
