Summary
“Of course, William. You are a good man, even with these undesirable qualities. The Lord will not abandon you if you do not abandon Him first.”
It is with these words in mind that Will prepares for mass the next morning. The Lord will not abandon him, or any of their parishioners, unless he turns away from Him and His word first. He will not test Will with more than he can handle.
Then he spots him.
He sits in the last rows of the congregation, those that are there for the larger crowds of Christmas and Easter rather than the normal crowds of a July mass. At first Will thinks that he’s simply observing the strangeness of the man’s decision to sit in the back and the unfamiliarity of his face, but he realizes far too late that he’s staring, performing his duties on autopilot rather than enjoying his time in the Lord’s service and finding joy in guiding his congregation to salvation.
