For the prompt "professionalism failure" for the 2023 round of novemetober.
"…don't you think, Alhaitham?"
He could have strangled the Amurta sage for calling attention to him so directly. Instead, he frowned slightly and made a non-committal noise as he tried to figure out what, exactly, he thought about the statement that had been made. The sage in question had made a few good points earlier, but Alhaitham wasn't certain that the most recent bit had been an extension of those.
Calling back to them might be risky if the conversation had moved too far beyond it. And yet…
A scoff from one of the others. "The Scribe believes himself too far above the rest of us mere mortals to bother offering an opinion."
"The scribe," Alhaitham corrected, "is meant to be a neutral presence, recording and not interfering."
