    Now, he watches him skirt past another bike - Enea’s? - and he needs to suppress the urge to race him again, just to get his blood pumping through the day.
    Another couple of laps pass like this – drowsy, somehow, because it’s not enough of a challenge to warm up the front tyre, to collect data on the maximum performance, on the graining and the degradation, on the synergy between engine, tyre life and energy consumption. He’s not an engineer, though he knows his bikes well: what really interests Marc in terms of performance is to win. He could do it on a flat tyre, he has demonstrated he can do it in underperforming machinery, so he’s just. Getting bored to death, to put it mildly. He gets a little jittery, also, when he’s not properly racing, only playing around. Something inside him slams and bangs, rattling his bones, like a creature creeping inside the door it has splintered – surely, this time, it’s all Valentino’s fault. Valentino and his all too imposing presence, challenging him, calling for him.

     

    Marc and Valentino still know the steps to their own personal dance too well not to perform it together one last time instead of talking like adults should.
