Summary
“I didn’t think there’d be people like us here,” Alex comments as she polishes off her ice cream cone, and three words reverberate in Seth’s mind. People like us.
It makes her think back to when she was a kid, how her tomboyishness was endearing then, how her masculinity went from cute and acceptable to isolating the second she showed up at her bat mitzvah in a suit and tie (something she had begged to wear) with her hair cropped close to her head. But here’s Alex; all lace and leather and fishnets, big hoop earrings, platinum blonde pompadour standing tall on her head, bright purple streak standing out. Visibly queer in a way that’s different than anyone she has ever seen before.
“Yeah, well, you know now,” Seth finally says.

But this feeling of shrinking around family has been there since forever, leaving him feeling vulnerable and tiny and unable to talk, like he can't find the right words or make sense of it.
