No, Adam did not have an ExtraCare card. No, he did not want to sign up for one. No, he did not want a bag. No, he did not want to donate to St. Jude. No, he did not need a receipt. They were likely questions the cashier had to ask because the corporate office mandated it, but all Adam could think of as he tapped his debit card to pay was how all those questions — and the printing of mile-long receipts — added at least fifteen seconds to every transaction. Fifteen seconds across the dozen people that had been ahead of him in line meant three minutes of his evening that could have been given back to him. In the grand scheme of things, three minutes was nothing, but the fact that he'd lost it to questions that nearly everyone answered no aged him prematurely as he gathered his bottle of Drano and headed toward the door.
Three minutes, it also turned out, could be life changing.
A plumbing emergency in his new apartment brings Adam Parrish to a CVS after midnight to buy a bottle of Drano. Little does Adam know his late night shopping trip is going to change his life.

“Okay,” Adam said slowly. Like he’d never learned much about music, he’d never learned much about dancing. There’d never been money for him to buy a ticket to a middle school dance, and though Aglionby hosted mixers with an all-girls school from Albemarle County, he’d never wanted to go the two years he’d been able. Not when his time was better spent working so he could pay the school activities fee that covered the cost of the mixer. He didn’t think he had two left feet — Ronan would never let him live it down if he did — but he still stood stiffly upright, barely moving his boots on the rug as Ronan turned them around and around in front of the fireplace. “But why are we dancing?”
“Because movement creates energy,” Ronan said, taking a sideways step as he spun them, forcing Adam to follow, “and energy creates heat,” he took another spinning sideways step that put them next to the end of the couch, “and you’re not warm enough, so thus,” another step, “therefore,” another spin, “dancing.”
“So we’re dancing,” Adam said, “because of thermodynamics.”
