Sean whistled low behind them. "Christ, Morgan. You look like wan av dem fancy paintings rich folk hang over deir shitters."
"Shut up," Arthur and John growled at the same time.
Sean blinked.
John barely spared the redhead a glance, his eyes locked on Arthur's tight shoulders. "You," John started, throat gravel, "You good?"
Arthur's jaw stiffened; a muscle jumped in his cheek. John had seen him look less tense staring down the barrel of a twelve-gauge. "Peachy," he warned.
The Frenchman emerged from the saloon, "Oh, he's perfect, non?" he purred, approaching Arthur's shoulder and perching his hand on it like a hawk. His fingers plucked at Arthur's lapel. "Don't you think, Dutch?"
Their leader stared silent for a moment, a pause that dragged on too long. "Depends," he decided, "on whether he's ready to do the job right."
Arthur's eyes drifted to the brick street, voice quiet and strange, devoid of his accent, normal slur, and everything that made him 'Arthur', "Of course, sir."
Dutch and some old associates have a new job lined up for the gang. Despite the fact that Arthur's never been first pick for a con, he's being asked to 'play prey'...

“She recently won a three-star, put on quite a sho—” The man paused and stepped forward, putting a hand up to block Boadecia’s head when she tried to bite him. He sighed. “Arthur has got to quit sleeping in her stall.”
Charles stepped forward, following his gaze.

“I just want you to be comfortable,” Mrs. Sudbury said.
“We both do,” said Mr. Sudbury.
“I’m very comfortable,” Arthur said. “Mrs. Sudbury, I tell you, this is the most comfortable I’ve ever been.”
The strange part, he realized, was that it was the truth. It wasn’t even just physical comfort, although this situation certainly was better than any other he’d ever had in that regard – it was also that he felt like he wasn’t beholden to anyone, didn’t have to watch his back, didn’t have to do anything that made his gut twist. Sure, he had these two dear sweet fools to take care of, but… well, maybe he liked that.
Arthur runs away to California.
