“You’re not safe with me,” Charles said quietly.
He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. The warning lived comfortably in the space between them. Max studied him for a second, like he was evaluating a contract, then nodded once.
“I’m not trying to be safe,” he replied.
Charles smiled, slow and satisfied. “Good,” he said. “That would make this very inconvenient.”
