Summary
There was another weight that sunk the mattress, creaking the bedframe beneath. Warmth cupped Oscar’s face — he heard his own breath hitch. What he braced for was the silk impersonality of gloves, but it didn’t matter now that those hands were wrapping around his head, untying the knot of void’s fabric and pulling down the sole barrier Oscar had. When the world returned to Oscar, it was Alex’s face he blinked into clarity, mirthless and coloured by a dying flame. Then, he met his gaze and it was as if Oscar never had a glimpse into what laid past his veneer.
Alex smiled. “Good evening, Edenic.”
Who else should he expect?
--
Sodom had deformed Oscar, and there was something ridiculous in him fooling himself that where he fell was the lowest level he could land from where Alex had pushed him. Then there was Alex and an unknown, urging him to do worse. Because this was what he wanted, no?

Summary
Then again, this religious veil wrapped around Norfolk never seemed to fully conceal him. While some may speak of their true beliefs privately, he wasn’t the type to do so — let alone admit that the gazes upon his wall held more weight than the ones above because then, they were tangible, found in the very architecture in the estate he called home. When people spoke of fearing the divine, he would often furrow his brow, yet nod along to appease them, for he couldn’t fathom how someone so far removed from you could incite such emotion. In truth, though, he was aware of the sense — even understood these believers more than he thought. Because simply by remaining on the wall, they, in turn, knew him.

Summary
A part of Alex feared he might be making it worse for him — promising him to bring him the impossible, but when did he ever start to see Oscar as this fragile thing — of something too delicate to be hurt and be undeserving to be shattered? Had it started when Oscar became ill and his fragility had reason or did it begin that night, where kerosene illuminated him or did it do so long ago, in a quiet moment of some such where Alex awoke and realised he had been running on empty?
--
Alex wonders about Oscar, then himself, then the truth on how they ended up here. And to think that the thought of another reality lured them to Spain.

Summary
In spite of the twilight, sparse in between darkness and all mystery reeling back into itself, Crisóstomo’s world dimmed itself at the edges. Then, the night bled into the river. For a moment, Crisóstomo closed his eyes and listened to Elias’ breathing, letting the waters’ soft ripples beneath them muddle itself into another, insignificant noise until it was as if it wasn’t there at all. Crisóstomo let his hands trail around Elias’ torso, feeling around for that evident sense — a slight cinch of the waist, a somewhat coarse fabric and a body that seemed to bear all the weight of the world and remain infallible until he laid his hands on him.
--
After Elias breaks him out of prison, desperation and Crisóstomo's version of penance merge.

Summary
“The man I swore my life to was Crisóstomo Ibarra, sir.”
Simoun regarded Elias; his shoulders had stopped shaking the more they debated amongst themselves and the tone he used with his words were steady — a resolute one that even Simoun, with his disbelief at the current state of his friend, could acknowledge that Elias was sure of himself when he said this.
There was a pause before Simoun said, “And I am not him?”
--
Lightning strikes again and Elias' misfortunes continue.

Summary
For what it was worth, Elias didn’t say any so-called truths after partaking in drink that night — at least, he didn’t remember doing so. Perhaps he did, in a spilt mutter as he ate a meal better than his usual ones — the ones of quality before everything, with nostalgia aching his heart. Elias felt Ibarra’s gaze on him whenever he looked down on his serving and ate; had he noticed his melancholy on his features? He furrowed his brows and wished they were outside, as by then, he could’ve used his hat to his advantage and hid his expression. The ‘truth serum,’ perhaps, had not referred to one’s speech, as he assumed from the term — rather, it referred to every aspect in one’s body and made even the most enigmatic man readable.

Summary
“How’s Britain?” He leaned against the building’s pillar.
Naruhodo blinked. “I’ve only got here just a handful of hours ago, you know?”
“How’s coming back home, then?”
Naruhodo paused, before finally, “It feels good.”
Kazuma hummed and put his cigarette in his mouth once more. Naruhodo never really commented or refuted that, did he? Then again, Kazuma did the same when he let the words out of him; a choice made of baseless reason. ‘Home.’
--
Ryunosuke and Kazuma try to bridge the gap between them.

Summary
“With Mr. van Zieks and Mr. Asogi’s experience behind the camera, I’m sure everything will go smoothly, wouldn’t you say, men?”
Huh. That made sense. But, didn’t that also mean that…
Something clicked in Ryunosuke’s mind and he couldn’t stop thinking about it.
“As smoothly as it would go… With him, at least,” Asogi smiled at Ryunosuke and a plethora of questions rushed within him. What did he mean by that, exactly? But, before Ryunosuke could ask them, Barok had spoken up.
“Certainly. I’m astounded at your… skill set at times, Mr. Sholmes,” Barok said. “No, rather than skills, you’re unfortunately unrelenting. But, I suppose the situation would work itself out knowing we were involved in the recruitment process.”
Involved? Ryunosuke darted his eyes to Sholmes who seemed chipper as ever, even whistling a tune.
“I’m glad we chose you, Mr. Naruhodo,” Asogi said.
“Indeed.”
What was going on?

Summary
They’d be leaving tomorrow — Ryunosuke knew that was the reason tonight felt lonelier, but the more he stuck with Asogi, the more the sense of fluttering nervousness seemed to go away at the thought of Britain; Asogi and home — the night and the sea.
Here was Ryunosuke, age 23, still eager to stay awake despite the travel that awaited him and the winter that caused him to sleep. Perhaps it was the distant scent of food that kept him going, the want to sear the sight he saw into his mind, the strange magnetisation Asogi had on him tonight, or a mixture of all three that made him do so. Either way, Ryunosuke didn’t want the night to end, even if he was aware that he’ll regret that decision tomorrow.
--
On the night before their departure, Ryunosuke and Asogi take a walk, and Asogi gives Ryunosuke something to think about.

Summary
“If you think that way, then surely you could move to my place,” Asogi said. He had a point — even had room for Ryunosuke after his then roommate graduated. While Ryunosuke didn’t visit him as much as he did, he knew that it was nicer than at the Garrideb’s; the fact that he could see Asogi every day is adding to that pro. Yet again, the bar to surpass his apartment standards is sea-levels low. “Why’re you so insistent on staying there if your life’s on the line?”
Ryunosuke paused.
How was he supposed to word this, exactly?
“I…”
“You…?” Asogi looked at him, eyes encouraging for him to continue coupled with his slight lean. Ryunosuke was weak with him, but he seriously can’t tell him about that, even if he looked pretty asking for him to do so.
There was a detail he’d left out from his anecdote from Asogi — intentionally, that is.
And that’s the fact that those near-death experiences aren’t just that, but are accompanied with fantasies… of the sort. And in those fantasies, there was a common subject: Asogi.
