“‘Just say what is on your mind. I do not need to understand it. You do not need to understand it either. It just helps to get it out.’
She looked at him silently.
‘What?’ Ilya urged.
‘When did you turn into Dad?’ She looked suspicious.
‘Oh, I say something helpful and suddenly I'm Dad? Why can't this be a Papa thing?’
‘It's not your thing.’
‘Okay, fine, I might get it from Dad. But it is a very good move, okay? I would know.’"
Ilya always loved seeing pieces of his mother in his teenage daughter. Until he sees a piece he desperately wishes wasn't there.
So he panics and tries to parent like Shane.

Summary
Shane wondered, while he tried to keep the party going on his own and not explode at everyone they knew and cared about, if people would have done this if they’d had a girl. Would she have gotten hockey-themed things for her first birthday? Or would people have actually listened to them when they said it was supposed to be dinosaurs?

Summary
“No vodka?” Rozanov asks, tsking in disapproval but looking amused. “What then? What does the great Shane Hollander want when he does a good job? What is your vice, Hollander?”
“Hmmmm, mangoes,” Shane sighs out wistfully. It’s not a dangerous allergy for him, but it does mean being itchy and sometimes a little queasy for a couple of days after. Really he knows that he should probably avoid them altogether, but with every other restriction he has and with how controlled he is with his life even outside of that, it’s his one little indulgence, a pressure-relief valve of one bad choice to let some steam off at the end of a season, when he carves out time in his cottage when he can make his annual bad choice and enjoy a few days of wild mango madness before he makes himself buckle back into the restraints he usually keeps his life in.
He looks up when he hears Rozanov snort.
“Mangoes?” Rozanov repeats, tugging his shirt over his head. “Really?”
“They’re good,” Shane defends. “Better than vodka,” he adds, pointedly.
(shane has food allergies but makes an exception for mangoes) (5 times ilya didn't find out about this allergy and 1 time he did)

Summary
“Have you considered the possibility that Neil has chosen you, but believes you have not chosen him?” Renee says. "Have you ever explicitly told him what you want?”
“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.

Summary
Luca "the future of hockey" Haas has a meltdown on the ice in the final five minutes of the game.
So naturally, the best way Luca thought to rebrand was by throwing himself into a summer athlete campaign with the Centaurs, in hope to outrun the fear that he’ll never be as skilled, confident, or sexually expressive as Ilya Rozanov was at his age.
But when the harmless Luca Haas snaps and shocks everyone by fistfighting with Filipino-Canadian youth athlete Angelo Perez, summer quickly derails into a dilemma to be seen as mature, living up to the expectations of the team, and these newfound, guilty urges for the very guy he fought on day one.
Centaur matchmaking. Missing home. A messy summer fling. A mean article. An exploration of what sparks are supposed to feel like. And Ilya catches Luca buying condoms.
And a “bad influence” that makes Luca feel—maybe for just one summer—that it's okay to be a little selfish.
OR; Practically a character study of Luca Haas' insecurities + his foil to Rozanov disguised as me trying to revive the scrapped Haas book
