It’s an itch that you can’t scratch out of your skin, where old lacerations have amassed on epidermis. The ringing in your ears that doesn’t go away no matter how many times you’ve changed your hearing aids.

    It’s sleeplessness even when your body is so exhausted, because your mind is on overdrive. Yesteryear’s failures are monsters breathing under your bed. The friends you let slip, the lives you couldn’t save.

    Twenty years later, Katsuki rescues Izuku from a villain attack. As they rebuild their friendship from scratch, he learns what it means to be a hero.

    “Kacchan.” Deku doesn’t raise his voice, but it’s enough to stop him in his tracks anyway. “I—I’m going to miss you.” His words waver, and Katsuki doesn’t have to turn around to know exactly how those tears look slipping down Deku’s cheeks.

    “Of course, you are,” Katsuki grunts. “Who’s gonna push you to be better, huh? You better not go soft over there.”

    That draws a weak, watery laugh. “Don’t worry, I won’t. I still have to beat you when I come back.”

    The familiar challenge should make Katsuki’s competitive spirit roar to life in his chest. It feels dimmed now, flickering under the ice that still hasn’t let go of his insides. Still, he manages to reply, “I’d like to see you try.”

    Katsuki doesn't know what he expects after graduation, but he knows it isn't for Deku to immediately set off for America. What he expects even less is what grows between them with time and distance.
