Summary
It took all of Clark’s willpower to pull away from the screams and focus on searching for one heartbeat—the one heartbeat that he'd been yearning to hear for nearly a week.
He knew Bruce was there.
Bruce had to be there.Sweat beaded on Clark’s forehead as he listened. There was so much—too much.
His ears first caught a rasping breath and a shaky exhale; the sounds were followed by the subtle creak of kevlar. Clark then realized that, if not for the other sounds, he wouldn't have recognized Batman at all. Because the man's pulse was slow, far too slow.
Clark’s breath hitched.
[i.e. Batman goes missing and Clark is forced to confront his own feelings on how much he's grown attached to the man behind the mask. To make matters worse, the rescue mission takes the League right back to Apokolips... and pain ensues]
