Chisato tilts slightly down so that her nose is digging deep into Takina’s hair, and her lips are soft against her scalp. “Maybe death isn’t so bad, you know. Maybe I’ll get reincarnated into a fish.”
“A fish,” Takina says, thinking about the filtered blue of the aquarium.
“Yeah. I’ll be a big bluefin tuna in my next life, and you can eat me as sushi. I know you like ootoro a lot.”

“Where?” Takina whispers to herself beneath the rush of the shower at Chisato’s old safehouse, scalding water a cascade over her back save for where a patch of gauze rests over her left shoulder. “Where are you, Chisato?”

Finally, Chisato tosses her head back and laughs. Takina’s eyes trail the length of her exposed neck, her ears absorbing the sound of her giggles, and warmth washes over her like an ocean wave’s kiss.
“You say the nicest things sometimes. If you’re not careful, I’m going to start thinking you secretly like me under all that,” Chisato says, a fond smile on her face.
Takina tilts her head. A bit of condensation drips onto her feet, and she tenses momentarily. “Not possible.”
