“Ay Connor, you’ll just let your girl go off with a guy like that?” someone said. Connor said nothing, but Percy could tell he wanted to. The fact that he didn’t was odd. If Annabeth was Percy’s girlfriend (which she wasn’t), he wouldn’t like the fact that she was being encouraged to kiss someone else (then again, if she was his girlfriend, they wouldn’t be sitting in the circle in the first place, because why the fuck would they kiss anyone that was not each other?)

loosely inspired by lyrics from SZA’s “Anything”
Annabeth doesn’t know everything. Not how Percy really feels about her, not if Percy’s actually interested in Rachel, not if Percy’s suffering as much as she is from their distance, and definitely not whether Percy even knows her anymore.
Basically, Annabeth feels like she doesn’t know her own best friend—are they, still?—at all.
But it’s winter break, their friends are itching for an evening out, and some confessions slip out on the ice.
“I don’t want to fight,” he told her.
Her heart lurched in her chest.
“It’s not my business who you talk to. I just… I’ve missed you.” His voice faded into a low, strained whisper.
She wanted to tell him she missed him, too. More than she’d ever be able to express.

Percy flexed his left hand. “This aches a lot,” he admitted. “And here”—he pointed to his shoulder—“and a spot here, on my chest.” The pit scorpion sting. The Keres scratch. And where the chimaera had first stung him.
“These are all poison wounds, Percy.”
He didn’t know what to say, so he said something snarky. “I think if I’m poisoned by an attack or a bite, it’s technically a venom wound.”

Post-Tartarus, Percy can sense all the poison left in his body from his many, many injuries over the years. Annabeth doesn't react to this knowledge the way he thought she would.
