Gods Au. “The gods crossed over from the spirit world to the mortal world very near the beginning. Taking mortal human forms and reincarnating after each life. In the past their power was seen frequently, and the people wrote stories of them. As the world modernized, spiritual influence shrank, and the gods were lost. All except the Avatar, who continues to be found and revered in each life.”
Zuko, personally, doesn't believe in such bullshit. The Avatar is just a human the world decided to worship. After being disowned by his father, Zuko turns his attention to the Avatar, wanting to prove his lack of godhood and convince the world. Imagine his surprise to find the Avatar himself is an atheist as well, and he wants Zuko's help in tearing down 'The Avatar's reputation.
Zuko joins the Avatar's efforts, along with a girl named Katara, someone he comes to both admire and fear. While they work to tear down the image of the Avatar, Katara's belief and power cause Zuko to realize, perhaps the gods are real, and perhaps they are closer than he thought.
