In order to pay off a debt that's not his, Shang Qinghua agrees to marry a man that's as cold and unyielding as he is stupidly rich.
“Marriage?” His voice breaks over the word like it’s a curse. “Really? Doesn’t it feel a bit irrational?”
“Are you planning to pay off an eight-figure debt with this job and a host job?” Mobei Jun asks, and Shang Qinghua almost wants to throttle him. Though, if his wallet didn’t have a direct funnel to his dad’s bank account, Shang Qinghua might actually have been a little comfortable.
“That’s not what I meant!” Shang Qinghua huffs, his head still spinning. As far as being a married man goes, Shang Qinghua is nowhere near ready.
“What?” Mobei Jun raises a single eyebrow. “Were you looking to marry for love?”

Generally, Shen Qingqiu only visits him at work when he’s really got something to yell about—protagonist dick size or sex pollen caves or weird poisons that Shang Qinghua forgot to invent cures to, or something. Today, he says, “Look, there’s news and I thought you should hear it from me.”
Shang Qinghua doesn’t look up from his papers at first. “Okay, sure,” he says, absently—how much money are they spending on incense again? Absolutely fucking absurd—and glances up when Shen Qingqiu remains silent. “What is it?”
Shen Qingqiu folds the fan and taps it nervously against his palm. “Mobei-jun’s getting married,” he says.

Shang Qinghua is not stupid.
It does not take a genius to know what it means when you ask a servant where your lord has left to and they readily supply the name of an exclusive brothel in between the two realms. Especially when it's after your utterly disastrous first time together.
So he goes away for a bit to clear his head. And promptly gets kidnapped.

Shang Qinghua pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. “Maybe they should stop.”
He could feel Mobei Jun looking back up at him again. “You think that?”
“Fuck all it did me, trying to stay safe,” Shang Qinghua said weakly, dropping his hands and looking up at him. “I spent two years alone. What’s the point in being safe if I don’t have anybody?”
Mobei Jun met his stare steadily. “What’s the point in being in danger if you don’t have anybody?”
Shang Qinghua breathed in, then out. “Then I guess not being alone is the real solution then, isn’t it?”
Mobei Jun looked back at his food. “Yeah. Yeah, maybe.”
