    After Maomao serves as a medical attendant at the birth of Basen and Lishu's baby, a shift begins to happen inside of her that changes how she feels about herself as a woman, and about Jinshi as a man. Meanwhile, the prince remains far away and blissfully unaware that his cat is in heat and the emperor, due to an error in understanding, believes that Maomao is already pregnant and decides the right thing for him to do is to reveal this information to the head of the La clan so they might quietly find a way to cover for an unplanned pregnancy that doesn't exist.

    Jinshi is terribly aware most people don’t love the way he does - case in point, he’s picked a single wood-sorrel when he could’ve had a blossom of every variety if he so chose. While he of course feels some male pride seeing Maomao pregnant and knowing he did that, more than anything he feels a deep love and curiosity for the child, and immeasurable appreciation for his wife. It's fascinating to know they created something that didn’t exist, and now they would be responsible for guiding it through the world. He would be a father.

    So what was a good father?

    Or, Jinshi's on the cusp of fatherhood, and then he's just plain in it. Meanwhile, the rest of the world keeps spinning.

    As peace settles along Li's borders, the Great Commandant Lakan, head of the formidable La Clan, is called to return to the capital. Maomao, his only child and head Lady of the clan, returns to a home she barely remembers. Little excitement is expressed here, as much of the court considers her a scandalous illegitimate child born out of a tryst with a courtesan. Rumors swirl that she inherited the La Clan's signature strangeness, with whispers circulating about her unusual behaviors and interests amongst the haughty ladies. Though she tries to stay in the shadows and live quietly, she somehow still catches the gaze and interest of who matters most: the devilishly handsome and unmarried Crown Prince.

    After that, her simple life grows a great deal more complicated.

    Jinshi has always sparkled for others, but Maomao has never been mesmerized by it. It was just another thing she was immune to. Now here he was, not particularly sparkly, just obviously in love, and Maomao felt what she could only describe as being enraptured.

    Maomao knew she needed to say thank you, but at this moment she did not trust her tongue with words. She was afraid something rather mushy would come to her if she tried to speak, and she wasn’t ready for that yet. Which felt silly to acknowledge - that she had married this man, but was struggling to love him.

    And it was not loving him - Maomao had deduced this now. It had almost nothing to do with Jinshi at all. Her constipation with regards to her own ability to love had nothing to do with her commitment to him, either. She cared for and admired him deeply, more than she had anyone else, except maybe Loumen. Maomao hopes someday she is able to admit that to him, but she is still accepting that it is even safe to admit to herself.
