Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”

“Evening,” Shane says, though it’s leaning closer to midnight than to dinnertime. “Heard from my deputy that somethin’ was afoot down here.”
TJ carefully tips his head, gesturing at the table of men. “They rolled in about an hour ago. It took me until now to recognize them—Bergara and his boys.”
Shane looks at the table again, and this time, one of the men is looking back. Even across the room, his eyes are fierce and devastating to gaze upon, like taking a pair of bullets to the gut. Messy black hair escapes the brim of his hat, brushing the top of a long, vivid scar that runs from forehead to cheek over his right eye, and the expression on his handsome face is as arrogant as it is enticing, like he’s inviting anyone who seeks him out to start a fistfight and end it with a good, hard fuck. Shane would know that face anywhere, and has seen it on more WANTED posters than he could ever hope to count.
Or, Shane is the sheriff of a town that infamous bounty hunter-disguised-criminal Ryan Bergara has set his sights on, and will do whatever it takes to keep Bergara from burning it to the ground

Ryan goes off and does research because he’s Ryan and because both of them are just used to researching whatever they need to know, whether it’s stories about demons infesting houses or bears fighting in WWII. But this time, Shane doesn’t know that Ryan researches stuff until it’s sprung on him. And it was probably his doing to kick it off in the first place.

With both of them being relatively new to this whole "Dating a Man" thing, Shane has not expected Ryan to be the one to bring up butt stuff. He is really glad he did, though.

It’s Shane in his black-and-red shirt and expectant expression, his fingers wound together in a subconsciously supplicating gesture like he’s waiting for the kind of lightning in a bottle that Ryan’s not sure he can deliver here a second time. It’s the pressure he hadn’t realized he’d put on this one shoot, this one night, until now it’s suddenly here and it’s the last one he’s ever gonna get and it’s not going to be enough. Because how could it be?
“This place sucks,” he tells Shane, and he hears the pleading tone in his own voice. He wants to leave.
He doesn’t want to leave, of course, because then it will be over.

Slowly, memories of Shane’s darkened eyes and lecherous stares as they dissected the case began to make sense— the hand tight on his thigh during the car ride home, Shane’s lingering eyes on his ass as he stepped out of the car.
