    “Only tonight.” Lan Wangji answers, thinks for a moment before he adds, “I have been waiting for a ghost.”
    “A ghost, huh? Why? I mean, not that it’s my business.”
    “It brings fortune.”
    “A ghost brings fortune? First time I’m hearing about. Call me intrigued. What’s so special about the ghost? Only if you are allowed to share, that is.”
    He isn’t allowed to share. He doesn’t care. He wants Wei Ying to know. “A ghost used to visit the Cloud Recesses Gate every year for two thousand years. It waited in front of the gate all night, vanished with the first rays of light. After every visit, the Cloud Recesses had been renewed.”
