Inside, the party continues as if their hostess hasn’t abandoned them. Bass thumps in Caitlyn’s chest and she flicks the half-spent cigarette from her fingers and watches the embers fade as it falls to the sidewalk below, then explode into hundreds of tiny sparks against the concrete.
“Vi isn’t coming,” Jinx says. “Did you see her text?”
The animosity normally present in her voice is strangely absent. Instead, Jinx just sounds resigned. Caitlyn grimaces a little, wishing she had some way to cover for Vi. “I was hoping maybe she’d make it after all. It is your birthday.”
