“Lele…” he whispers, gently lifting him.
The baby stirs weakly, eyelids fluttering. But there’s no babble, no reach of tiny arms toward his face. Just a faint, miserable sound and the sluggish way Lele leans into his chest like he can’t hold up his own head.
Gao Tu gathers him close, tries not to let his hands tremble.
“It’s okay. Baba’s here,” he murmurs, pressing his lips to Lele’s forehead.
He smells it then — faint, but there — the sharp bitterness of fever sweat clinging to the edges of his own scent, sage and warmth gone sour with worry.
