Summary
The thing is, Eddie grew up in a culture that emphasized masculinity and a man has to be the protector and provider. It was incredibly hard to tear himself away from that indoctrination. Only until he moved to LA and away from his parents and the suffocating environment of the military was he able to accept things about himself that he denied all his life. Mainly the desire and need to let go and be the one who needs to be protected. He couldn’t always be the provider; he wanted to be one wrapped up in someone’s arms and be surrounded and feel safe.
All those desires cracked open when he joined the 118 and met Buck and Tommy.
Or; After a fake date then a real date and Eddie getting shot, they figure out what they really want.

“I’m doing what’s best for you.” Bobby stated firmly, his eyes pleading with Buck for him to understand. Except Buck didn’t understand.
“No, you aren’t.” Buck said sadly. “Bobby, you only just got off of suspension when I was released from the hospital, months ago. Suspension for not telling the truth to the brass. We both know I’ve been cleared by four separate medical doctors, as well as three separate psychologists. I recertified. I set records when I recertified. What are you telling anyone for them to believe your word over other professionals?”

Summary
Lucy encourages Buck to take a short break from the 118 after the lightning strike. He's struggling with keeping up the facade that he's ok, that he's still the same person, when he knows that he both is and isn't the same. His team is supportive enough, understanding that he needs to take a knee or even just a breather from all the craziness that the 118 manages to attract.
Buck manages to get comfortable with himself again, as well as making friends from some of the other stations. He isn't sure about Tommy at first, but they end up having a good flirting back and forth banter. It's not quite the same as it was with Eddie, but it's ... things are good.
Until the freeway collapses.
And Kameron has a baby on his couch.
And his ex-girlfriend writes a book about all the personal conversations they had.
Somehow he still manages to be an amazing firefighter and gets the attention of a Captain who is retiring and decides Buck is the one who should replace him.

Buck is super excited to be hosting a Halloween party for the first time in years, now that the 118 have the night off.
Unfortunately, everyone gets called back in for a major fire. Except Buck who had alcohol in his system, and Tommy—who Lucy brought with her—who’s on a mandatory 72 hour off. He elects to stay when everyone else leaves.
