“Tell me something — what year is it, Whistler?”
It took her a moment to respond, because this felt like a trick question. “2019. Why?”
The woman gasped again. Kate turned to her, though she looked away immediately. The woman wiped her eyes, muttered a barely audible ‘excuse me’, and fled the room.
“Lucy!” The man called out, and made a move to follow. But he turned back again, turning worried eyes on Kate. He seemed reluctant to leave Kate alone, and it soothed her a little.
It made her a little braver, too. She tried to smile. “That was the wrong answer, wasn’t it?”
