He was just tired...
So fucking tired.
Tired of thinking he sees her in the corner of his eye, tired of thinking he's catching glimpses of her blue hair... when it's just pieces of fabric flying in the wind. Pieces of his heart crumbling to dust further and more. Every. Single. Day. And he misses her, so badly that it hurts, and his body aches, and his heart aches, and his mind aches. Everything just aches. Like despair took a metal baseball bat and caved his head in.

Summary
Ellie is aware of what's going on in the Firefly hospital, but that doesn't mean she can do anything about it. Not until Joel helps ensure she gets a choice.

Then a low voice, one she would know anywhere. One she would recognize at the end of the world. She screamed at her body to move, but the most she could manage was a flex of her fingers and toes, a quiet moan she meant to be Joel’s name.
“Free her,” he ordered, his voice so low, so quiet, one she had never heard before. Maybe this was the voice that he’d used back in the old days, back when he was someone who killed innocent people. Someone Maria had warned Ellie about.
Ellie should have been afraid of it. She found she couldn’t summon the fucks. Joel was her person, and if he was here, using that voice, with a gun, that had to mean something bad was happening. Joel wasn’t one to act before he thought, no matter the situation. Joel didn’t kill innocent people anymore. If he told her to stay, she stayed. If he told her to run, she ran. And if he told her to shoot, she’d shoot. No questions asked.

“Explain,” Ellie echoes, and he feels her hands fist in the fabric of his shirt when she sways too far to the right. His impulse is to reach back to steady her, but this isn’t the moment. Instead he leans back just a bit, and she takes the gesture for what it is, leaning forward a bit more to steady herself against him.
“We didn’t know it was Joel with you,” Marlene says, in that same calm tone. “As soon as we figured it out, we brought him here to recover.”
“And tried to drug me,” Ellie spits like an angry cat.
“You were panicking,” Marlene says. She moves forward a half-step. “We just-”
“Back,” he orders, and after a jerk of the rifle, she does. He doesn’t know what’s going on, not yet, but he knows that Ellie is upset and Marlene has had something to do with it.
And what else does he need to know, really?

Summary

No more ignoring the rumbling of their stomachs and parched throats. They get to relax and bask in the glory of it all. So why does the thought of actually doing that make her sick to her stomach?

Summary
There’s several possibilities of where he could be. Each one sends a new wave of nausea through her body. Option one, he’s dead. Yup, she almost throws up right then and there. Option two, he’s alive but unconscious somewhere. That one isn’t so bad. As long as he’s up and threatening everyone in a few hours, that’s fine. Option three, he’s here but they’ve separated them for some reason. Oh fuck, she really doesn’t like that one. The only reason they would do that is if they plan to harm her in some way. They know Joel would kill every last one of them before they could even get close enough to touch her. The last option is the one she despises the most, he left her. He took his payment and left, like he was supposed to.
OR
Ellie wakes up in the hospital in Salt Lake City. Joel's nowhere to be found, she has several questions, and barely half of a plan.
