Dean had watched it for months. The lies, the secrets. Sneaking off with that bitch Ruby. Yeah, he saw it all. He saw it and he seethed. Inside, just massive, roiling rage, all the time. That bitch was taking his brother from him. And then Dean found out what Sam was lying about. The whole big thing. Demon blood. And Dean did what any responsible, self-respecting, jealous, seething, son of a bitch would do. He locked his brother away in the panic room.
He tried to pretend he didn't hear Sam's cries. He tried to pretend that he didn't ache to run down there and just hold his baby brother. Then Bobby went to sleep and Sam's cries had ceased for the moment, but Dean still ached with it. He still needed to give Sam what Sam needed. So Dean did the stupidest thing he could do. He slashed open his tattoo, and he went out to a crossroads.

Dean had noticed the antics of his little brother. Of course he had. But Dean prided himself on not caring about anything beyond pleasure. And how he could get pleasure from his little brother? He didn't really know. He didn't really care. So he ignored the desperation-coated attempts to find him. Until some low level he didn't really care about, brought it to his attention that little Sammy really really cared, and wasn't going to leave the demons alone.
Dean didn't care about the other demons in the slightest. But he had to admit, such devotion was honestly refreshing. No demon or anything willing to spend time with one had much of an eye on the permanent, but Sam… Sam was desperate. Sam was willing. Perhaps Dean could lure him… the ideas were endless.

Dean had a tendency to hide away when something was wrong, just like a cat or a dog that was dying. That's why, when Dean started avoiding Sam, he naturally thought something was wrong. Which meant Sam needed to try to pull him out of it.
Sam pulled out all the stops from the get go. Concerned puppy dog eyes with entreaties for conversations. Gifts. Hovering. Dean rejected all of them in surly Dean manner; too loud rock music, aggressive machismo, and, if he couldn't get away otherwise, straight up leaving for bars.
Sam called Bobby. Bobby had no clues about what might be up with Dean. He also had no advice for Sam on how to handle Dean. They both knew he wouldn't, but it was still disheartening. Sam knew better than anyone else how to handle Dean anyway.
So when Sam felt backed into the corner, after hanging up with Bobby, he began to do his research. He researched far and wide, for anything that could force Dean to talk to him. No spells that he was willing to do. No science that he could find. Finally, Sam landed on something called African Dream Root as his best chance. He called Bobby back.

Sam skipped stones. There wasn't much else to do anyway. John was out, and for once, so was Dean. His cabin fever must have hit, Sam reasoned. Sam's had. That's why Sam was even out here, hands seeking stones worn cool and smooth by the elements. Sam felt like that sometimes, a sea pebble people noticed just to throw.
Sam threw again, relishing the wet plop signaling he'd failed. Sam was good at that some times. When he got paper cuts, he'd press, relishing the sting, so he could attone somehow. Failure was as familiar to young Sam as breathing.
Sam threw again. Plop. Dean came up behind him, their dad's leather jacket hanging too loose on his teenage frame. Sam braced himself for the anger he expected, but—"Heya Sammy," Dean crowed, cheerfully as anything. Sam winced.
