What happened to them, you didn’t know for sure. But the smell. It’s death, heavy in the air. Every inhale brought the smell of rot, so strong, and so clear. It was soaked into every fabric and every pillow. Emanating not from a human body, but from the toys. The small toys scattered everywhere. Underneath beds, strewn over a table, hanging by their neck. There were hundreds, too many to count. And where they tore, there was no cotton, but blood and viscera that fell from their broken limbs. Splattered across the walls and floor, stained where it had dripped down years ago from the felt rabbit hanging from the ceiling fan.

Doey shrieked. Steam rose where frost bit into his dough, parts of him stiffened and cracked, and his monstrous form convulsed, sobbing and shaking himself free of the freeze.
Still pinned to the wall, you thought back to your time with him in the caves, and his voice, smaller than you'd ever heard it after being hit by the gusts back then.
"HURTS HURTS HURTS HURTS HURTS HURTS
He's made it impossible for me to get around here. Traps like this are EVERYWHERE! It's the cold that hurts... The big mean doctor knows that...It's okay. You're okay. It's all okay..."
The toy's one weakness. But even then, after every freeze, every burst of nitrogen, he broke free, over and over.
The dough of his appendages, farthest from the sprays, remained unfrozen, and dough slid over mouth again, but you forced one deep breath before it sealed.
Instead of continuing to claw uselessly at him, you reached with your free hand toward the controls of your GrabPack, eyeing the controls of the tunnel boring machine just overhead.
You were angled correctly. You could do this. You just had to...
You hesitated.
