“I always thought you hated me,” Max says suddenly.
Charles doesn’t answer right away. His stride falters like the words caught him off guard. “I thought you didn’t care what people thought of you,” he says eventually, his voice measured.
“I don’t,” Max replies, too fast, too defensive. Then he hesitates. “But you—” His fingers twitch at his sides, restless. He stops himself, irritated.
Charles turns to him fully now, brow furrowed. “But I what?”
Max clenches his jaw. He doesn’t want to say it. He doesn’t want to admit it—but you knew me. You understood me better than anyone else. And you still couldn't like me.
So instead, he shrugs. “Doesn’t matter.”

The night the papers are signed, Charles goes out for a drink. He ends up with Max Verstappen, the dangerously charming lead singer of the band that accidentally exposed his marriage. Whether it’s fate, revenge, or something neither of them is ready to name, one thing is clear: Max doesn’t want to fix Charles. He wants to ruin what’s left — and rebuild something entirely new.
But as media sharks circle and secrets spiral, Charles has to ask himself: is he falling for Max ... or just falling apart?

“You’re good at that,” Max says after a moment, softer this time.
“At what?”
“Not making it hurt.”
Charles shrugs, his lips twitching into a faint smile. “I used to work with children. You have to be gentle or they scream.”
Max chuckles, low and short. “You think I’m going to scream?”
“You might,” Charles says lightly, finally meeting his eyes.

In which Max Verstappen finds himself falling head over racing boots for a pediatrician-turned-Formula 1 physician with unfairly good looks and an accent that should be illegal.
