Summary
“Careful out there today kid,” he’d said seriously, “patrol yesterday came back pretty roughed up. I guess there’s been more hordes moving in from the city.”
She’d laughed, shoving him playfully with a, “c’mon old man! If I was as scared of infected as you are, I’d never leave the house!”
The look on his face had made her stop laughing, mostly because she knows why Joel is so afraid of infected. It’s not for his own safety.
“I’ll be safe. I promise.”
That seemed to put him at ease. Too bad she’s a huge fucking liar.

Summary
Ellie notices that Joel never takes off the bracelet she made for him. Not once does it ever leave his wrist. He touches it a lot too. When he’s anxious or upset, and his hands are trembling, and his breath is shaky. When he’s happy and being too damn sentimental, and his eyes have gone all soft and warm. She catches him brushing calloused fingers along the braid and heaving a heavy old man sigh like something in the bracelet has resettled whatever had been out of whack.
She has no idea why, but the sight always makes her kind of want to cry.

Summary
A groaning exhale from the backseat has Ellie perking up, and she nearly drives into a fallen tree when she whips around to look. Whoops.
So she watches Joel from the rearview instead, hungrily drinking in the sight of his growing wakefulness between glances at the road.
“What…” Joel grumbles, hand going to his head. Then he freezes before shooting up, eyes wild. He’s so big he almost hits his head on the roof of the car, and his legs—which are folded up against the door—kick wildly while he tries to right himself.
“It’s okay!” Ellie cries, aiming for reassuring but landing somewhere closer to hysterical. “It’s okay, you’re with me.”
For a brief, insane moment, Ellie wishes fiercely she had a pet name for him, something she could call him when he needed comforting. Nothing makes Ellie feel more cared for and safe than baby girl in Joel's southern drawl.
Old man doesn’t have quite the same ambience.

Summary
“Where is Joel.” It’s not a question this time.
Marlene sighs, her shoulders sagging. “I’m sorry, Ellie. He left.”
Left?
Ellie blinks. “You’re lying.”
The sympathetic twist to Marlene’s mouth makes the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. “Ellie, I really am sorry. He asked for a car this morning and—”
“Shut the fuck up,” Ellie bites out. “You’re lying. That’s a lie.”
There isn’t any desperation in Ellie’s voice. No tremor or plea. Because she knows, beyond the shadow of any doubt, knows as certain as the sun rising, that Joel would never, ever fucking leave her.
Ellie isn’t sure what does it, if it’s the hardness in her tone or the look on her face, but something conveys to Marlene that her lie is dead in the water. The pity on the woman’s face shifts into something else, something cold, something that makes Ellie’s blood beat like thunder in her ears.
