Contrariamente a quanto aveva sostenuto, non aveva sentito l'odore di erba, pergamena nuova e dentifricio alla menta verde.
Una sbalorditiva fusione di confusione seguita da una presa di coscienza marginale, e poi un'istantanea paura l'aveva fatta arrossire così tanto che la stanza era diventata sfocata ai margini della sua visione mentre soffocava la bugia.
Era vecchia pergamena conservata nella sezione riservata, mele verdi aspre e qualcosa di speziato - non cannella, chiodi di garofano? - che le indugiava nelle narici. Era stordita, le sue palpebre si abbassavano pesantemente, anche se una piccola parte del suo cervello urlava quanto fosse sbagliato. Una parte più grande e più rumorosa di lei spingeva la vergogna a favore degli istinti più bassi. Quegli istinti si smorzarono e si dissiparono e la vergogna si ammassò in quanto più lontana era dal profumo delicato e inconfondibile che si diffondeva dal calderone.
