    He tried the door. Locked.

    “Buck!” he called again, louder this time, panic rising.

    Still nothing.

    Eddie didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the nearest tool from his truck—didn’t think, didn’t care—and shattered the window with one hard strike. The glass fell away, and cold air rushed into the car.

    Chris hummed, without answering.
    “What is it, Chris? Talk to me.”
    “Everyone missed us... except Buck.”

    “What... what do you mean? Of course he missed you. So much. He texted me about you all the time.”
    A single tear slipped down Chris’s cheek.
    “It’s my fault. That he’s not happy we’re back. When I first got to Texas... I was... so mad. At you. And at him because he picked your side... I didn’t always answer his texts. So he stopped. And now he hates me.”

    “He doesn’t hate you, Chris! He loves you!”
    “No. He hates me. And he hates you too. I saw it. He didn’t even look at us. He didn’t… he didn’t say it back. I told him I missed him and he didn’t say it back.”

    Eddie had nothing to add after that. It was hard to reassure someone when you truly believed they were right.
