John Constantine told them not to do the thing. They did it anyway.Or, Danny gets summoned by the League, and he actually kind of adopts them in the process. Because these big city heroes don't know anything about ghosts and who is he if he doesn't help them out? Besides, the Watchtower is in space. Danny's always wanted to go to space...

Summary
The moment All Might told Izuku he couldn't be hero, things only went further downhill. He failed the UA exam and found himself in a sorry state. Years later he was able to pick himself up again. Got a decent job and being a respectable member of society... well except for the illegal vigilante work he did on the side as Token. It was a far cry from true pro-hero work, stopping muggers and burglars, small time crime. He got a chance to show what he could do when Eraserhead sent out a SOS. Then he accidentally got pushed into a portal and found himself back being fourteen year old quirkless Deku with All Might telling him all over again he couldn't be a hero. Time to show the guy he was wrong.
Or to summarize, vigilante Midoriya Izuku travels back nine years into time and gets another chance at a impossible dream.

Summary
Danny would like to say for the record that it was not his fault.
In fact, Danny would say that it was entirely Clockwork's fault. After all, he wouldn't even be in this situation if it wasn't for that cryptic time god.
But what was his fault was the fact that he kept helping.
He kept taking the cash from the assholes messing with the residents who lived in the area (and damn there were a lot of assholes near where he lived). He kept accepting their offers of food. So because of this new routine that kept him able to afford to rent out his shitty (and possibly illegal) apartment and the hunger pangs sufficiently satisfied, rumors grew.
tldr; after Clockwork dropped of Danny in Gotham he tries to make the best out of the situation which includes helping out some people. Except along the way that led to rumors that he was an up-and-coming crime boss. A rumor he was largely unaware of.
