For the first day of open slopes, he’d figured there would be more people rushing to join and take advantage of the fresh opportunity like him. But, past the tired-eyed driver who looked absolutely done with life and someone passed out in the back who had definitely missed their stop, Tubbo was the only passenger left and thus the only one to stand and leave as three or four others took the chance to slip past him and move in.
And as he stepped out and took the small trek up to the gates, he realized why.

Not a lot of people knew Dakota Cole was Native.
Dakota didn’t even fully know if he was himself until recently. His aunt had said he was Ojibwe, but what good did that mean when he didn’t feel Native? When his parents weren’t around to tell him what that meant, when he grew up never feeling a part of that culture, when he was white passing that nobody ever questioned what race he was?
How could you really claim you were something if you had never felt like you were ever that?

“How are you feeling, honey?” the first nurse says as he pulls the syringe out of the IV. Ashe can’t stop staring at the needle in her arm. She is alive.
“I-” Ashe barely gets the syllable out before she is sent into another coughing fit, her voice raspy as if she hadn’t used it in months, despite her knowing full well that her vocal cords had been in use within the last twenty-four hours. “I-I’m fine,” she manages to get out. “Where’s my dad?”
Ashe wakes up.

He had a little less than a month before school started. On the last day of summer, if he was still unsure about this whole superhero thing, then he was going to pack his bags, and leave for Deadwood first thing in the morning.

“Summer's almost over- after tomorrow, we're not going to get to stay out all night, and-” Dakota paused, like he was struggling to come up with the words, “We can't- have fun, after tomorrow.”
William didn’t feel the need to remind him that he still had weekends, and breaks to look forward to. He also didn't have the heart to tell him that he probably wouldn't be there with him.
“So?”
“So?” Dakota repeated, “Let's have some fun tonight.”
