“May I?” he whispered.
“You…” could he? She wasn’t sure. On paper, this seemed like a terrible idea. One did not sit on the lap of a stranger on a subway train. But she was so cold. And he had a blanket. And his arms alone were…large enough to add warmth of their own, she thought. She was too cold for her body to spare the blood needed for her to blush, and for a fleeting moment she was thankful for the cold.
She nodded, at last. He closed the gap between his hands and her waist and pulled her into him, seating her on his lap and tucking her into his right arm while he adjusted the blanket over them both. He let his left arm fall to his side and she perched herself on him with as much dignity as she could retain. Her back was straight and she stared straight ahead.
“Thank you,” she said. It seemed like the right thing to say, given the circumstances.
A modern AU in which Olive is a teacher and Adam is in the military.
