Unfortunately, the question makes Maria sit up in surprise, pulling her away from his chest enough so that she can turn and face him. “How the fuck did you know it was violet?”
He laughs at her clear shock—he fucking loves when he can manage to surprise her—and attempts again to pull her closer. “What, a guy can’t know his flowers? Am I too macho to know my flora and fauna?”
“No, no, I just—I thought it was lavender.”
“Lavender? You don’t know what lavender smells like? Lavender’s way stronger!”
“Oh, excuse me. All my years in law, and I didn’t know it was a crime to not know the fucking difference between violet and lavender.”
“I’m just sayin’! They ain’t even related.”
“Oh, fuck off, they ain’t even related.” Maria’s imitation of his accent, as always, makes him huff out a laugh. “That’s what you sound like! They’re both purple!”
“The fuck does that gotta do with how they smell?”
“Fuck off, Tommy Miller,”

Maria pushes aside any positive feelings she’s had about this day and this man, meeting his eyes coldly. She tries not to think about how not even ten minutes earlier, Tommy was watching her scream for her life, dangling from a goddamn tree.
“This isn’t an invitation,” she starts, voice unyielding and stern. “We’re talking you to somewhere where our people can make a decision on you. So you’re officially on probation, Tommy Miller. You steal anything, you’re out. You fuck with anyone, you’re out. We find out you’re still with the Fireflies, and you’re dead. You do anything at all to put my people in danger, and I will make sure to shoot you myself. Am I understood?”
Shockingly enough, Tommy just smiles—it’s a small, soft grin, boyish aimed straight at her. Either he was left deranged from his injuries or a tried-and-true adrenaline junkie, because her threats only seem to intrigue him. “Yes, ma’am,” he says, voice deep and charming. “I understand you clear as day.”

You look so pretty when you’re angry.
Shane blinked, his insides pooling inside him, like hot wax inside the end of a candle. He glanced around at Rose and Miles, who were chattering loudly, paying him no mind.
He hadn’t heard from him since he had left, or well, fled, his house that day. Shane had checked the thread between them more than once, just to see if maybe his phone was glitched, that he had sent him a message and it just didn’t make its way through.
Shane’s traitorous heart thumped faster as he tapped on the message, half-hoping it was a mirage, some kind of delusion from one too many blows to the head.
He was always met with the same two messages, the last ones before Shane had run, and everything had settled like a rock sinking into the calm surface of a lake.
Or, Ilya drunk texts Shane.
