    Wei Wuxian feels a mix of anxiety and fear wrap around him tightly, like a chain that he can’t take off. “Do you hate me that much?”

    Finally, Lan Wangji responds, “Do not hate.” It’s almost soft, and it reminds Wei Wuxian of when they both were stuck in Xuanwu cave four or so months ago. “Could never hate Wei Ying.”

    “Lan Zhan,” He whispers, and it just barely gets Lan Wangji’s attention. “Please, Lan Zhan, you don’t have to do this,” Wei Wuxian says, his voice cracks and he’s desperate — so, so desperate — as he extends his trembling hand, “Come back to Yunmeng with me.”

    In another universe, Jiang Cheng rescues Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji from the cave. Lotus Pier is attacked and burned, Wei Wuxian gives up his golden core and becomes the Yilling Patriarch

    But even the smallest changes can lead to a completely different future

    In this universe, the Wen sect reach the cave before Jiang Cheng

    To save Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji surrenders himself to the Wen in the cave. As time goes on in his capture, he makes many terrible sacrifices to foil the Wen sects plans at conquering the cultivation world, ultimately losing his golden core in the process and getting thrown into the burial mounds

    Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian is desperate to find and save Lan Wangji. Left with the echoes of a song and his own complicated feelings, Wei Wuxian only knows that he cannot rest until he gets his zhiji back

    Except, the Lan Wangji that comes back is not the one he knew

    Thirteen years later, Lan Wangji is resurrected into the body of Mo Xaunyu. This time he might just get a chance at love and maybe even save everyone in the process

    “I’ll help,” Lan Wangji says.

    “Hey, Lan Zhan...” Wei Wuxian unfolds his leg and gives his foot a playful kick. “I told you to think about it! This means I’d be here for a long time, taking up your time, your space, your peace. And I can’t pay you! I have nothing of worth to give. It isn’t as simple as-”

    “I’ll do it,” he says again, more forcefully this time. “You don’t have to give me anything.”

    Wei Wuxian looks away, hiding a small smile. Doesn’t he know Lan Wangji would do anything for him, by now? Doesn’t he understand that he holds Lan Wangji’s life in his hands?

    Post-CQL Wei Wuxian comes back to the Cloud Recesses to ask for Lan Wangji's help with his new golden core.
    Together, they learn how to communicate, how to ask for things, and how to touch each other.

    Their relationship develops in between quiet dinners in the Jingshi, meditation sessions, core training and a lot of Lan Juniors speculation on whether or not they're actually together yet.
