    Putredine: The state of being rotten.
    :
    Sukuna wears him like an ill-fitting costume. His fingernails tear, his skin goes sallow, and the teeth in his mouth feel loose and brittle. The more time that passes, the more his body decays from the inside out, containing a curse it was never meant to survive. As a Vessel, he makes a fitting workaround to the Itadori debacle. A band-aid on a bigger problem.

    The King of Curses is sour about it, more so than he lets on. When he looks in the mirror with Megumi’s face, he sees Itadori Yuuji instead and seethes over ruined opportunity.

    Growing up, Sukuna feels nothing for his family, for anyone really - a facsimile of something that could pass as moderate affection is the most he can conjure for his twin brother, Jin, but nobody else.

    This misanthropic emptiness drives his ennui, leads him through a bloody thicket of expertly butchered limbs and leaves lavishly served flesh in its wake - all in pursuit of something he isn't sure could serve him.

    As Jin passes his newborn child into Sukuna's indifferent arms, however, a violent emotion takes root in his chest.

    "Hey, Yuuji," Jin says, his eyes glowing and cheeks flushed proudly. "Say hello to your uncle Sukuna!"

    Or, Sukuna believes Yuuji is the missing piece to his soul.

    Yuuji’s grandfather is burning when the strangest man he’s ever met asks him to choose his hell.

    “Will it be you?” Yuuji asks. “The one to kill me.”

    There’s a brief pause before the response. “Probably. I wouldn’t entrust Sukuna’s vessel to anyone else, certainly not at full power.”

    Something twinges in Yuuji’s chest at the assumption there. A duller clench follows—not quite guilt.

    “No,” he says, finally looking up. “I mean now.”

    Even with the blindfold—worth a sharp flare of confusion each time he looks at Gojou—Yuuji can tell Gojou’s surprised. He can see it twist into a frown too, and it’s somehow a kinder expression than all his smiles have been.

    “Definitely then,” Gojou tells him. “I’m already here anyway. Just so we’re clear—you’re choosing to die now?”

    When told to choose his hell, Itadori Yuuji picks the easier one—a clean death, then and there. He couldn’t have known that it was never really a choice.

    Or: Gojou Satoru kidnaps a teenager, supposedly for his own good.

    Now that he's looking for it, Yuuji can feel it: the words are etched into him, woven into his muscles and carved into his bones. Start by saving me, Itadori. Yuuji promised he would, so now he must.

    The burning pain is starting to come back again. It begins in his chest this time, slightly to the right. Yuuji swallows, reaching up to press his hand against it.

    So, he thinks dazedly, as the universe begins to take him apart. This is what happens when you break a Binding Vow.

    Megumi dies in Shinjuku. Yuuji is thrown back in time to save him. Again, and again, and again.

    (Or: Yuuji says “I’ll save you, Fushiguro” and the universe says “bet.”)
